How do you know what actions to take and where you are heading in your business, if you don’t have clearly defined goals? The answer is you don’t. Oh, you may think you do, but the truth is – without clearly defined and specific goals, you are certain to attract distractions, fuzziness, and indecision into your daily routines.
In my opinion, the primary reason for goal setting is to gain focus on the ultimate accomplishment you would like to achieve. When you are focused, you can then plan and organize your time, priorities, and resources to be in harmony with your goals. Every task you work on should be associated with a specific goal you want to accomplish. Doing do will help keep you in control and help measure your progress towards achievement of that goal.
Your ‘goals’ should not simply be a list of to-do items that you check off throughout the day. They are either short term or long term objectives or targets you want to attain in your business or life in general. Here are some of my principles for effective goal-setting:
- Make them reasonable: Even seemingly unattainable goals can be achieved if you put your mind and power of belief into it, however, don’t set unrealistic goals. They should be something you can achieve through a consistent effort.
- Put them in Writing: When you write down your goals, they are no longer just a thought in your mind!
- Be Specific: Set times, dates, numbers, etc. When you do this, you can measure your success and track the exact progress you are making towards meeting your goal.
- Be Positive: Always state your goals in a positive way
- Prioritize: You will most likely have more than one goal. Give them a priority so you know which ones are more important and deserve more attention.
- Set Milestone Goals: Along with the main goals you want to attain, set smaller goals or milestones that work towards accomplishing the big goal
- Set Goals You Can Control: Don’t set goals in which outside forces have control of the outcome. Set goals that are based on your own level of performance so that you have control over the outcome. For example, ‘I will talk to 5 prospects a per day’ vs. ‘I will have 5 prospects contact me every day’
The practice of goal setting is a critical success factor you must begin to practice if you want to be successful. Do not underestimate the importance of goal setting.
To Your Success,
