You hear me say it all the time. List building is one of, if not, the most critical task you will perform for your online business. It is vital that you build a list. The main ingredients to building a list are your capture page, your offer, your mailing list manager, and YOU. Numerous mistakes can be made in each of these areas but I’d like to highlight the most critical blunders you can make in each one:
- Capture page distractions. Your capture or ‘squeeze’ page has a single purpose. That is to collect a prospects name and email in exchange for whatever it is you are offering. There should be no advertisements or links to other websites on your capture page. You will without doubt lose subscribers if you do include ads. Your squeeze page is not a sales page and it should be composed of the headline, the benefits of your offer, a lead-in to the opt-in form, and the opt-in form itself. Anything else is a distraction.
- Poor incentive. You must provide a compelling offer that will entice your visitor to opt-in. If it’s an eBook or special report, it should be one that’s not available all over the Internet. Preferably, it should be one of your own products. Whatever it is, make it something that will provide added value to your visitors.
- Poor Mailing list manager. Do not cut corners when it comes to your mailing list manager. Choose an established and reputable service with excellent support. There several major players available and you really can’t go wrong with one of the big names. Aweber, GetResponse, iContac, and Constant Contact are a few. I use and prefer Aweber.
- Failing to build a relationship and establish credibility. This is a big mistake and one of the quickest ways to lose current subscribers. If ‘the money is in the list’ then ‘how much money’ is in your relationship with that list.
